Meat For The Beast – Where The Monkey Sleeps, Glasgow

Have you ever left the house for work, arrived and then realised that the lunch you spent time making the night before was still sitting in the fridge at home? Well, that’s what happened to me on Friday last week. Rather than go all the way home to get it, I decided to make the best of it and head to ‘Where The Monkey Sleeps’ for a quick burger.

There’s only one burger on the menu – the ‘Meat For The Beast’. An Aberdeen Angus patty with blue cheese, bacon, rocket and rocket mayo, served on a warm bagel. ‘WTMS’ is usually rammed during lunchtime, so I decided to phone ahead and order in advance – I love that they offer this service.

The walk from WTMS to my office was excruciating. The strong whiffs of blue cheese and burger weren’t helping my hunger pangs. Back in the warm, cosy confines of the office, I soon realised that this burger was going to be a rather messy one. The blue cheese was almost like melted butter, filling the top hole of the bagel. As I picked it up to take my first bite, it ran all over my hands but I was so hungry that I didn’t care.

The mad scientists in the WTMS kitchen have put together a pretty great flavour combination with this burger. It’s simple, but really smacks you right in the face. The peppery flavour of the patty, the saltiness of the bacon, the strong cheese and the mellow rocket mayo just work together extremely well. The cheese is strong, without being overpowering. The salt pierces through each bite and the rocket mayo just adds a lovely smooth finish to each bite. The patty itself was fine, but not the best I’ve ever had. It was maybe the slightest, tiniest bit overcooked, but the overall flavour of the burger was so good that I practically inhaled it.

So, what about that bagel? Usually, I’d never ask for a burger on a bagel but again – the flavour was so good and I was so hungry that I wasn’t too bothered. My only problem with the bagel wasn’t to do with taste but rather practicality. The blue cheese ran out of the top of the bagel and all over my hands before I’d even taken a bite. A bun would probably just hold everything together slightly better, but the bagel was soft, fresh and tasted good.

At £4.50, there’s not much to complain about here. It’s one of the best value lunches in Glasgow. Great food and great staff. I can’t wait to go back.
