It feels like only last week that we were posting our review of Glasgow’s first ever Street Food Cartel event, which generated much discussion over on our Facebook page. Due to the incredible success of the first event, we all knew that ‘SFC 2’ wouldn’t be far away. Fast forward a couple of short months later and we turn on our computer to discover that tickets for the second event have sold out once again in record time and much like the first event, we completely missed our chance to buy them! Luckily for us, a third date was added and we made sure to snap up a couple of tickets as soon as they went on sale. For the second event, Scoop events announced that they would be teaming up with popular West End deli and food emporium Lupe Pinto’s to bring the unique dining experience back to Glasgow.

Street Food Cartel 2 once again took place inside the SWG3 building in Finnieston, as a result of Glasgow City Council making it increasingly difficult for street food to actually hit the streets in our fine city. The set up was much the same as the first event, with both Scoop’s now easily recognisable food truck and Lupe Pinto’s preparation station set up at the far end of the room, with rustic, mis-matched plywood and chairs lining the rest of the space. The tables do get a little cramped and I did find it a little off-putting as the people next to us (who arrived later) sat and watched us eat as they waited for their own food to arrive. Once everyone had their food and the event was in full swing; however, this wasn’t really an issue. As we said in our previous review, we’re fans of the set up and the whole look and feel of the event and we’re glad that it was largely unchanged from the first event.
We’ve already covered the venue and atmosphere in our review of the first SFC event, so lets get to the food.
Both Scoop and Lupe Pinto’s menus each consisted of four or five hot dishes and one dessert. Dishes are priced between £4.50 and £6 each and are designed for sharing. We ordered five main dishes to share between two of us and one dessert each.
The first dish from Scoop’s menu was a slow braised beef rib with parmesan polenta, and truffled pepper radish slaw. The meat was perfectly cooked, unbelievably juicy and fell from the bone. The slaw had a lively kick, which lightened the flavour and balanced the dish well. I was very happy and surprised at the portion size, which had greatly improved from the first event.
Next up was; for us, the star of the show – Scoop’s confit pork belly, smoked chorizo, black pudding and chickpea stew. We enjoyed everything that Scoop served up but this was the clear stand out. This dish fired on so many levels – the smell that emanated from the tray as it was placed in front of us was almost impossible to resist and taste-wise, it beat everything else that we sampled at the event. The excellent, deep, smokey flavours and the pepperiness of the black pudding were a great contrast to the juicy, tender pork belly and it resulted in a dish that I didn’t want to share. I wish I’d ordered another plate…
Finally, from Scoops’s menu we also opted for the butternut spring roll with beetroot pesto, feta and a toasted hazelnut dukkah. This was an extremely light dish and a perfect starter, which we should have probably eaten first before the plates full of meat! The spring roll was delicious and the butternut filling was extremely flavoursome and unusual. I couldn’t get enough of the beetroot pesto and ended up using the rest of the spring roll as a spoon, to eat as much of the pesto as possible.
Lupe Pinto’s dishes consisted largely of different types of chilli and the first one we tasted was the ‘Lupe’s famous beef, chorizo and chipotle chilli’. This had a nice, smokey flavour with a healthy, spicy kick which was enough to make me appreciate the accompaniments served with the dish. On the side were paper dishes filled with sour cream, guacamole, jalapeños and sweet onions. Each chilli also came with a serving of wraps for you to build your own creation – a very nice touch.
We also went for the ‘three little piggies’ chilli, which consisted of pork shoulder, pancetta and chorizo. Perhaps I’d simply eaten too much food by the time I’d gotten round to tasting this or maybe the previous chilli was just that strong, but personally, I just didn’t feel that there was enough of a difference between the two dishes to warrant buying both. We made a few wraps, added generous helpings of guacamole, sour cream and the sweet onions, which were really fantastic. The wraps were very good, as was all of the food that we ate; however, we felt that the dishes produced by Lupe’s didn’t quite match up to Scoop’s offerings. On their own, Lupe’s chilli bowls were good and I’d have been happy if I’d been given it in a restaurant; however, I don’t think that anything else I could have possibly eaten that day could have been as good as the food that Scoop produced. It wasn’t that Lupe’s food was bad, but just that Scoop’s was that good.
As for the desserts, there were two on offer – a caramelised banana cheesecake and cinnamon-sugared churros with dark chocolate dip. Unfortunately, the churros were a little disappointing. They were overly crunchy and a bit cold by the time we got them. When I think of a churro, I imagine a long, soft, ever so slightly crispy dough-pastry; however, these were more crunch than anything else. The cheesecake, on the other hand was delicious, despite a less than appealing presentation.
Overall, we were impressed with Street Food Cartel 2. Our main issues with the first event were really the portion sizes and that we didn’t feel that the price of each dish justified the amount of food that people were served. This seems to have been addressed now, with slightly bigger portions that are good to share but small enough to allow you to sample multiple dishes.
Our total food bill came to £38 (plus the £10 we paid for entry) and we left completely stuffed. It’s not the cheapest day/night out, considering that the only drink we had was the complimentary ones that came with the price of the £5 per person tickets; however, we did try most things on the food menu. This is high quality, gourmet street food and probably the most unique dining experience you’ll come across in Glasgow.
Now, if only Glasgow City Council would wake up and let these guys do their thing out on the streets…
